Written by Scott Nearing in 1918 in opposition to WW I, The Great Madness is a powerful anti-war pamphlet. Nearing, the grandfather and mentor to B&P co-founder Elka Schumann, remains profoundly influential on B&P's philosophy and work to this day. Nearing and the pamphlet's publisher were put on trial for sedition--Nearing was acquitted, but his publisher was convicted. More than a century later, Nearing's critique of war, militarism, and the forces that sustain them remains strikingly relevant.
This hand-sewn edition features a newly carved Masonite cut by Peter Schumann, created specifically for the cover in 2026, and printed at Bread & Puppet Press.
