Theory of Politics
In 2023, Tamar Schumann unearthed this set of 23 masonite cuts in the Bread & Puppet Printshop masonite storage area. They had never been printed.
Peter Schumann, who carved the plates, couldn’t remember the exact circumstances of their creation, but we believe they were carved in 1962, when he, Elka, Tamar, and Salih were living in Ridgefield, Connecticut with Elka’s parents. Their style is very close to other work Peter made at that time, especially his plaster, mesh, and wire people reliefs, some of which are in the Bread & Puppet Museum.
When we showed the plates to Peter, he paired them with words, and we printed them for the first time in this configuration. They are being exhibited here in the Woodshed Gallery for the first time.
