Written by Harry Alonzo Phillips in 1929, this poem tells the true tale of the pond that ran away in Glover Vermont in 1810. The flowery turn of the century language (“ …Bright dew bedecks yon flowering thorn…”) is juxtaposed with Peter Schumann’s playful, cartoony pen and ink black and white illustrations. Jack Sumberg’s introduction gives historical notes on the “brazen act of citizen self-reliance…” , that lead to the extraordinary event, and includes first hand accounts. A book for kids, history buffs, and anyone who loves a good story.
