This booklet was produced in the early 80s around the same time Peter Schumann and the Bread & Puppet community were shaping their Cheap Art practice. This included converting one of their touring school buses into a mobile art gallery, which would be driven from town to town offering hastily produced paintings on cardboard, newspapers and other discardable material at rock bottom prices in the range of 5 cents to 5 dollars.
A manifesto in book form, "What is Cheap Art" sets forth the basic philosophy and principles of cheap art: utilitarian, absurdist and political. This modest pamphlet, with boldly rendered text and image in brush and ink, is an historical B&P classic.
