Tears Clouds Trees deploys a mix of charcoal, cray-pa, pen & sharpie drawings and reproductions of selections from Schumann's prolific output of paintings on hospital bed sheets. The book is roughly organized in sections around the titles' motifs of tears, clouds and trees. Produced and designed in the summer and fall of 2023, the work anticipates the injustice and horror of Israel's current genocide of the Palestinians in Gaza.
Yet there remains an undercurrent of hope (as in "tears of joy") which threads through the pages of colorful and expressionist renditions of both texts and images— to be found in expressions and acts of outrage and resistance to the false, thoroughly debunked "humanity" of capitalist civilization.
