J.S. Bach, Matthias Grünewald, and Hans Holbein the Younger “collaborate” with Peter Schumann in this small book entitled after an aria from Bach’s St. Matthews Passion, Erbarme Dich (Have Mercy). The book interweaves pages of the aria score with Schumann’s oil pastel renditions of pointing, pleading and despairing hands from Grünewald’s Issenheim Alter, and woodcuts based on Holbein the Younger’s series Totentanz (Dance of Death).
