Cry of the People for Meat, ca. 1970s-early 80s

In 1969, Bread and Puppet embarked on a 9 month tour of Europe with their epic tour de force, the Cry of the People for Meat. Loosely structured around the old testament, the 3+ hour play served as a parable of the Vietnam War which was raging at the time, as the anti-war movement—which Bread and Puppet had participated in since the early 60s—and social unrest surged through America, Europe and much of the rest of the world. The show and tour were a critical and popular success, hailed as a vital part of the new and acclaimed American avant garde theater movement of the 60s and 70s. This iconic image, captured by photographer Étienne George, marks the period shortly before Bread and Puppet relocated to Vermont.
